EPILOGUE

编后序言

The ancestors of the family of LING were the group of people dealing with ICE (Ling means ice)

The surname of LING is pronounced differently in different dialects. LING is pronounced in Mandarin, LING or LENG in Cantonese and LYN or LIN in Hakka…… For the purposes of this epilogue, Mandarin pronunciation is used for most names of places as well as human names.

In order trace back when and where our clan of Ling was from, we need to know the story of a great man called HUANGDI. Huangdi in general means Emperor, but this hero HUANGDI here is unanimously regarded as the first Emperor of China who conquered all different clans and unified the central part of China more than 5,000 years ago. He laid the foundation for the glorious history of China and Chinese culture. A unified nation called “China” has since existed on this planet.

According to the various historical records and the books of Ling’s genealogical tree , the clan of Ling originally belonged to the clan of Ji in the ancient period when HUANGDI ruled China. For another 2,000 years or so, the Zhou Dynasty was established the first Emperor of the Zhou Dynasty was the descendant of Ji clan, he was called Ji Qang, but was officially named Zhou Wenwang when he became the Emperor. The youngest son of Zhou Wenwang named Kangsu was relocated from Kang district (Nanyu Xen County, Henan Province nowadays) to Wei district (Qi Xen County, Henan Province nowadays) together with his extended family and servants.

One of Kangsu’s sons (the Emperor’s grandson) was appointed as an officer called “Ling Ren”, The main duty of his office was to cut and store ice in the cellars in winter which were used as cooling system by the Emperor and the Palace during the summer time. Since then, this clan of Ji became the clan of Ling as remembrance of the official title of “Ling”. These people were the first ancestors of our LING’s clan. It was about 1,000 B.C.  That’s why we said our ancestors were the group of people dealing with ICE. Can we proudly claim that we all have royal blood?

Our ancestors have since settled in the state of Wei (Tangyin Xen Couty, City of Anyang, Henan Province nowadays), many masterpieces from the Wei County such as “Songs of the Springs and Autumn periods” and “Ancient Chinese Chamber music” had been collected in the famous CONFUCIUS’ “Shi Jing” (The Book of Odes).

Many of our Ling’s descendants have moved thousand miles from the icy cold northern territory of China to the warmer and shinning places of southern China over the past few thousand years. The first ancestor recorded In this book of our family tree called Ri Lin Gong (Mandarin) or Ngid Lim Goong (Hakka) who moved down to settle in the town of Buji (Mandarin), (pronounced In Hakka as Bukak), city of Shenzhen about 300-400 years ago during the Qing Dynasty. Time flies and generations pass on, our grand uncle Ling Shenyuan, while writing up his genealogical tree book in 1934,had expressed:

“The history of Ling’s family

Goes back to ages past

The ancestors, the descendants

A million stories untold”

In Southern China, the mountain of Wu Tong which is very close to Buji and is 1,143 meters high. It is the highest mountain in the area around the Pearl River. A poet in the Qing Dynasty wrote the following in description of this mountain:

 “Wu Tong Mountain

Piercing through the sky

Where snow quietly falls in winter

And tranquility fills the summer”

There is no more snow or ice in Wu Tong Mountain nowadays because of global warming, however, many people and their stories surrounding this mountain, whether told or untold, are buried under the glacier.

I like Dai Wangshu, a poet of the new era. I am actually one of his super fans. I loved his poem ”Rain in the Lane”, and had longed for “wander along a long, solitary lane in the rain, in the hope of encountering a girl like a bouquet of lilacs gnawed by anxiety and resentment”. I also like his other poem “The unexpected-A poem Casually Composed” which was written when he was in jail in Hong Kong during the time of Japanese occupation in the Second World War:

“When the spring of life revives

Even the most ancient glacier defrosts

Revealing the splendid smile of yours

Roaring are our long lost dreams”

“Precious is the essence of life

For its existence never ceases

Frozen in the depth of time it may

Bloom an age of undying flowers”

Yes indeed, all precious and good things can probably be frozen, but will never cease. As one of a new “Hakkarian”, and a member of younger generation of our Ling family, I would like to mention a couple of outstanding people and their achievements, who were the descendants of our great, great grand uncle Ling Zhengao. One of them was already mentioned Ling Shenyuan, he wrote a famous article “The Theory of Strengthening China though Divine Righteousness” which was published in “The Globe Magazine” more than half century’s ago .Another uncle, Dr. Ling Daoyang, a scholar well-know in China/Hong Kong and USA also presented a series of remarkable publications and articles during the period of 1960’s and 1970’s. Those are examples of priceless treasures we inherited from our ancestors and will be passed on to the new generation, and the generations to come.

I remember the winter days of my childhood, water in little rivers and small ponds would be frozen, the children in our village would excitedly shout: “it’s Freeze-Ling(Ling means ice), the ice is Freeze-Ling!”. Even now, we don’t use “Frozen” in our village, we say “Freeze-Ling” or “Freeze-Ling ice”. “Frozen” is modern language; “Freeze-Ling” is more like a native dialect unique in our family.

I know Yellow River in northern China is “Freeze-Ling” in winter, but all “Freeze-Ling ice” will melt when spring comes to our great land, by then all flowers will be in full bloom, and the entire land of China will be filled with green, green grass again.

“The rhyme of heritaged

Flows swiftly as the wind

Quakes the earth with might

Nurtures a fountain of spring”
